For Evelyn

MANY years ago when Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” was all the rage, I told my cousin I’d make her a playlist, but for one reason or another, I never got around to making it.

Maybe it was because at that time making a “mix tape” (as one could call it) was time consuming. You had to download all the songs you wanted, then you had to burn them onto a disc, and when you were FINALLY done, you had to wait for the day you’d see the person it was intended for.

*oh WHAT a struggle*

I was about 10 at the time so obviously what I did or where I went was dictated by my mom. This meant that it was always a surprise whenever I saw my cousin.

Or maybe it wasn’t even that and I’m just making excuses for past me lol

Either way, it never got done.

I probably saw her another 30 or so times after that, and every single time, I was reminded of the non-existent playlist I owed her.

Well here we are, almost 10 years later and I’ve finally made the playlist.

Even though “Whip My Hair” is clearly still a bop as the kids say, my music preferences, as well as her’s, have obviously changed through the years. This kind of made coming up with the playlist difficult.

My cousin is in her last year of high school so I decided to make her a playlist using the songs that defined my own high school career.

Maybe one song will resonate and maybe none of them will, but either way, here’s a little part of me for her and for you if you’ll listen.
