Airways is a 4 piece indie rock band based in Peterborough, UK. The band consists of Jake (singer/guitarist), Alex (guitarist), Jamie (bass) and Brian (drums).
Though they formed in 2015, Airways have already acquire quite a bit of success. They’ve toured with bands such as Nothing But Thieves, they’ve played festivals in both the US and the UK, this May they released their EP “Starting to Spin”, and now they’re preparing for their winter tour across North America and Europe.
We were able to talk to Brian about the EP, the upcoming tour, and much more! Here is what he had to say:
Tell us a little bit about your EP “Starting to Spin”.
Our debut EP “Starting to Spin” came out this past May. It took us nearly 2 years to craft our sound and decide on the best songs to release first. We thought that these 5 songs were all different in their own way but connected. We’re big fans of bands that have a very diverse sound so we tried to capture that. No one likes playing or listening to the same song over and over again.
What’s your writing processes like?
It’s really different for every song. Jake is a fantastic writer and the main reason I moved to England was because of his melodic wizardry. I think it’s very easy to rip off melodies from things you’ve heard before but Jake’s got his own, whitty style that can’t be compared to much. Sometimes we will work more in the studio on a song whereas sometimes it happens in the rehearsal room.
Since the EP’s release, do you feel like Airways’ sound has evolved?
The sound has matured like crazy. The EP was actually finished in November 2016 so even before it was released we had new songs that we thought were better. I think it’s important for every band to progress with their fanbase. “Starting to Spin” was a great first step for us – you won’t expect what’s coming next.
What made you decide on naming the EP “Starting to Spin?”
The whole EP is based around a night out drinking. We didn’t really mean to do this but when we decided on the 5 songs it was obvious. “Starting to Spin” just felt like the perfect name to us.
What’s your favorite song off of the EP?
This is an extremely hard question. Personally, “Reckless Tongue” is probably my favorite. However, they’ve all been a favorite at some point. Leave it to the fans to decide!
What’s your favorite song to perform live? Least favorite?
This is too hard! We picked these songs because of how much we love them all.
Who are your musical influences?
We all have different influences, but as a band I would say: Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin… the list goes on.
What band/ artist do you hope to collaborate with in the future?
We definitely want Snoop Dogg to do a verse on One Foot eventually. That would be fantastic.
Are there any bands you’ve gotten to play with that we should check out?
We just did a UK tour with a band called “Dead!”. Really nice guys and they know how to rock.
What are you looking forward to the most on this tour?
Personally, I’ve been waiting to tour the US with Airways since the day I joined. I could not be more thankful to Nothing but Thieves for giving us the opportunity. Looking forward to reconnecting with old friends, playing our biggest tour yet, and seeing Nothing but Thieves live every night.
What cities are you most excited to visit and what venues are you most excited to perform in?
Chicago will be great because it’s our US hometown. Also really looking forward to playing the El Rey in LA and Gramercy Theatre in New York City!
What can we expect from Airways in the upcoming year?
New music. New tours. More hair.
